Sometimes, water damage in your bathroom is apparent, and sometimes it can go months undetected, even if you use your bathroom several times a day for months on end. A small leak behind a wall can go undetected for months, and if left unchecked it can cause a tremendous amount of damage without even showing a sign. NHI National Home Inspectors wants you to be aware of the symptoms that you might miss so that you don’t end up with a costly repair. Let’s go through a quick checklist that will help you to spot signs that something may be going on unnoticed.
Check Your Water Bill for Changes
A small leak may go unnoticed because there will be a minimal difference in the amount of your bill every month. There may be a tiny leak under a sink or behind a wall that is barely dripping any water. Since there are typically small variations in your water bill from month to month, you may not even notice. We do recommend checking your statement very closely from month to month and keep track of the smallest variations.
The Appearance of Mold or Mildew
Most bathrooms may pick up a small amount of mold and mildew now and again as most bathrooms are small with very little ventilation and a high degree of humidity. However, if you notice an area of your bathroom that is typically mold and mildew free, like an area or a wall that never comes in direct contact with water, there may be a pipe lurking behind the wall that has sprung a leak.
Look Up at Your Ceiling
If you are in your bathroom and there is a floor beneath you, make sure you look up at the ceiling above. You may notice a water spot growing over time. A water stain above means that you more than likely are having some trouble with the plumbing connected to the bathroom. Even worse, you may end up having some water dripping down from the ceiling. Water that accumulates between that space and the floor can be hazardous and should always be taken care of immediately. It can become weak and can lead to a collapse and far more expensive repairs. If you see a water stain forming on your ceiling without it having an apparent reason, please call in the professionals as soon as you can.
